Visual Studio 2010, Crystal Reports Viewer is not available. Report opens as hexadecimal

Machine: 64Bit Windows 7 Ultimate

Visual Studio Version: Visual Studio 2008 Ultimate/Visual Studio 2010

I have both Visual Studio 2008 & Visual Studio 2010 running concurrently. Everything was working fine (I had Crystal Reports viewer in both versions of Visual Studio (2010 and 2008)... then I did something unwise..

I was attempting to run a setup package for an in house piece of software. The install package was shutting down unless I installed Crystal Reports Viewer. (I had a newer version of Crystal Reports on the machine, but I wanted this package to run, so I uninstalled the version of Crystal Reports that came with Visual Studio 2008. (FYI -- This was a bad idea!!!) I was then able to install this in house software, but I could not view a report in crystal reports viewer in Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Studio 2010.

I partially fixed this - I have managed to restore the Crystal Reports Viewer in Visual Studio 2008 after:

Uninstalling the following (in this order): Visual Studio 2010, Crystal Reports VS2010, VS2008 SP1

Reinstalling the following (in this order): Visual Studio 2008 (Repaired), VS2008 SP1 (Install), Visual Studio 2010 (Install), Visual Studio 2010 SP1 (Install), Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 64 bit click once.

I see other postings telling me to uninstall the Crystal Reports for VS2010 and then to clean the registry of all references to Crystal reports - I do not know how to do this? (or if this is what is needed)?

I do not show the crystal reports viewer in Visual Studio 2010. I see the crystal reports viewer in Visual Studio 2008. When I open a Crystal Report in VS2010, I get Hexadecimals only.

When I try to add a crystal report to VS2010 - It tells me on a page titled "Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010":

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 is a free download for adding presentation quality reports to WPF, WinForms, and ASP.Net Web Sites.

Major new features include:

64-bit runtime WPF viewer Enhanced embedded report designer Support for exporting to XLSX Learn more and download Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 today.

I installed both the 32bit version & 64bit versions hoping that would restore my Crystal Reports viewer, but no such luck.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Let me see if I understand.  Crystal Reports didn't make it into the initial release for 2010, but it is a separate install from SAP.  The upgrade path has pain points, so if you move up to 2010, you are OK, but if you have a mix of framework version requirements, then I would suggest staying away from 2010.

After many un-installs and re-installs I was able to finally resolve this issue!! I was about to have the machine reimaged when I tried the last fix (which is my solution) and lo and behond ... it worked!!!

Word to to wise -- don't install components that came standard as part of a Visual Studio Install!!!
