We are loading large sets of data (1 million rows) into a table and want to optimize performance.  For the sake of simplicity and maintenance, we'd prefer to make the index unusable, do the inserts, and then rebuild the index, as opposed to dropping the index, doing the inserts and recreating the index.

We want to confirm that making the index unusable will improve performance to the same extent that dropping the index will.
