Using PHP, how can I test if a string is gz comrpessed?

$compressed = gzcompress('xyz',9);
$notcompressed = 'xyz';

if (testGZ(gzuncompress($compressed))) echo 'Compressed'; else echo 'Not Compressed';
echo '<br />';
if (testGZ(gzuncompress($notcompressed))) echo 'Compressed'; else echo 'Not Compressed';

function testGZ ($str) {
 if ($str is comrpessed) return true;
 else return false;
