Excel 2010 issue with the paste link function

A user has a problem with the "paste link" function in Excel 2010. He has a column about 1450 rows deep in several work books and he is trying to use paste link to link them to a new workbook in a new file. When he does this below the relivant data it fills in 0's to the max rows, 1048xxx rows! I tried to recreate this on another system and it didn't do this. We have tried both clicking at the top of the column and just selecting the rows of the column when selecting what to copy.

Office was reloaded onthe machine and a office removal script was run but it seems what ever in the profile has caused this is still there. Is there a way to limit a workbook/file to fewer rows to create less of a problem?

That works well as a work around, the user says he doesn't use Paste Link often but needed it in this case. No idea why it was selecting the max rows but with this it works around the problem and gives more control than Paste Link. As I like to say another arrow for the quiver.

Question: by any chance was the user copying or pasting to/from a .xls file, or are they all Excell 2007+ files (e.g., xlsx or xlsm)?

Some were XLS others XLSM.

Got to watch out for copy/pasting entire columns when working with different versions. XLS has onln 65K rows and even in Excel 2010, new workbooks in compatibility mode will not have more than that. Its possible this is what is the root cause of the problem.
