Help with 301 redirect

I'm trying to redirect one page on our web sit to another. I was told I should do a 301 redirect
so I will not lose any of our linking and or our ranking. I have access to htacess editor and did receive some help but was told it doesn't work because in out directory structure we have a folder with a name that contains a space. I guess a web broswer treats that as a %20 when it sees a space. So where I left off is changing the name of the original file to old an adding a file with the originial name. I guess I'm suppose to put this code into the file with the original name where it redirects it to a third file which is where I want people to be redirected to.

Thank both of you very much. Both have led me in the right direction just a follow up to make sure my redirect is working correctly. When I type in the old url the new page appears but why when I do a search on some key words my site appears but it show the old path.
Shouldn't it show the new path. I don't want to lose any linking or my rank that I'm at right now.
The site has to be reindexed before the search engine has the new address.
Reindexed is that something I need to do
