I have a single 2003 server domain controller with the local domain of abc.com. I have recently added an Exchange 2010 server to this domain. The problem is that I ca'n't get a public SSL certificate for the local domain name because there is a public domain with that same name. I have looked at the process for changing the domain name, but it looks complicated. I am looking for the easiest way to resolve this problem.

Can I create a new zone in the local DN(abc.local) and use it and use it for the SSL even though the exchange server is exchange.abc.com.

Or, can I use the SSL for the external public domain and not for the internal private domain? Will that make Exchange 2010 unhappy.

Or, would it be better to upgrade the domain to 2008 and rename the domain.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
