Terminal Server not allowing remote desktop login.

A production 2008 server that has been running fine for a year suddenly does not users login. It looks like its going to login, then they get kicked out. I have tried rebooting it.

When I try to connect using logmein, it bluescreens.
I do not have physical access to it, so I got someone to install Teamviewer as a service.
I can only access it through Teamviewer.

Inspection of the event logs shows that the following services did not start.
KLIF (Kaspersky)
Server
srv
srv2
srvnet

I have uninstalled Kaspersky.
The Server service will not start - its gives a dependancy error.
The srvnet service will not start - I get an System error 5 has occurred.  Access is denied

I cannot take ownership or view the security settings of the associated .sys files in system32/drivers.

I am currently running sfc /scannow

Any ideas?

Did you find any corrupt files with the sfc /scannow? It sounds like something was installed recently that is causing an issue. What is the last change made to the server? Maybe you can use a restore point to revert the system or use last known good configuration to see if it recovers.

I say this as I have seen blue screens when connecting remotely in the past, but it was usually the combination of the wrong software on the server. It is most times an anti-virus program and backup software combination or I saw this one time with NetWare client. If the server service and others are not starting, you need to resolve those issues, though, before looking at anything else; therefore, if you can pinpoint an exact change in the landscape to backout, I would do so then follow normal troubleshooting scripts if the problem continues.

ASKER

As far as I know, nothing has changed.

The sfc found nothing.

firewall an issue?  did a local GPO get set?
Interesting. I have seen that with some hotfix installations. I am glad you found the root issue.
That was weird.
