Bootable array vs. separate drive for OS and applications
Is the general consensus moving toward bootable arrays on servers vs. a separate drive for OS and applications? I noticed a lot of the new U1 servers are constructed with only hot swap bays and no internal bays. This is why I raise the question: is the present school of thought to have the OS and applications on the bootable array? What are the pros and cons?
As noted above, it's common for all the drives to be hot-swap. In general, the OS is put on a pair of drives configured as RAID-1, with the data on a RAID-5 or -6 array configured with the remaining drives.

Is it still the norm to separate the OS and applications on raid 1 and data on the Larger Raid 5 -10 array?

Ru1 servers have been hotswap drives with raid controllers and were configured with raid1.
There were no internal drives in the servers of that form factor.
