restore to vmware from "Windows Server Backup"

I put up a Windows 2008 R2 server  as a vm. I used Windows Server Backup to do a full backup (including /allcritical). Seemed to go fine.

Now I want to try a bare metal restore, to a new vm. (We use the free vmware, v5)

I go into vmware and create a new machine. The restore instructions I found say to boot from a Windows Setup Disk. I used the same disk I made the original Server 2008 from. But I don't see what I expect.

I'm looking for a gui Windows setup screen that has a "repair Windows" link on it. What I get is the blue screen/text Windows set up. That has a 'repair' option but when I select it, it immediately comes back with 'no hard disks found'. This is a true condition, as I specified the disks in the vmware 'configure new machine' but no OS has yet been laid down.

What am I doing wrong???

Thanks

Larry
