no mailflow between Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2003 during coexistance.

Hi All,

We have a single Exchange 2003 server up until this weekend.  We'd installed a new Exchange 2010 server with co-existance in mind.  After a successful installation, we're faced with the problem that there is no mailflow from 2010 to 2003.  I've created a user with a 2010 mailbox for this test.  No 2003 users have been migrated to 2010.

1.  Emails from 2010 user is unable to send to external recipient (stuck in queue).
2.  Emails from 2010 user is unable to send to 2003 reicipient (stuck in queue).
3.  Emails from 2003 users to 2010 user successful.
4.  Emails from external sender to 2010 user successful.

I have removed and recreated the Routing Group Connector according to Microsoft and the results are the same.  It's bi-directional for the RGC.

We have a BES and I have checked these instructions and applied them and results are still the same.

Can someone shed some light?

Thanks!

So.. You've changed your firewall rule to point port 25 at the 2010 server?  If not, please do.

You've configured a send connector under Organisation Configuration > Hub Transport > Send Connector with an address space of *? If not, please do.

You've deleted the SMTP Connector in System Manager under Connectirs on the Exchange Server? If not, please do.

Can you check the configuration of you Default SMTP Virtual Server on the Exchange 2003 Server as per my guide here: https://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_3044-Exchange-Server-Mail-Flow.html

Do you use a SPAM/AV appliance? Is it set to send/receive mail from the 2010 server?

What is the error the queue gives?
Hi,

It seem that no routing from Exchange 2010 to your Exchange 2003 FrontEnd server. On Exchange 2010, launch EMC and at Organization level | hub Transport | Send Connector.

Please verify that you have a send connector to connect to your exchange 2003 frontend server

Yes, we have SMTP open on the firewall.  Yes, there is an address space of * under one of our connectors.  In fact, all the send connectors from 2003 was replicated as a result of the installation.  In other words, all send connectors are teh same as the ones from 2003.

Currently mailboxes that still remain on the 2003 server email out through the 2003 SMTP server so if I delete it under System Manager, it will stop users from email out to external emails, right?  I'm not sure if I should do that at this point whereas all 2003 users are working properly (sending internally and externally).

We use Postini as spam and AV filter, which is an outside service.

I don't think I have one.  How can I go about creating one?  I've created send connectors before to use smarthosts, etc, but have not configured send connectors to connect to a 2003 Exchange server.

Messages that are sent from the 2010 mailbox is stuck in the 2010 queue which indicate a 451 4.4.0 DNS Query failed.  Seems that it's trying to route through the RGC.  If I'm understanding this properly, it should not be going through the RGC and instead, it should be going through a SMTP connector in which I create on the 2010 server that leads connects to the 2003 server?  Is that correct?
SloanIT,

Email from external will reach your mail gateway then it will route to your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 FrondEnd server right?.

To create send Connector:

On EMC | Organization node | Hub Transport | Send Connector

Create New Send Connector which Address Space is * and Network tab - Route mail through to following smart host - point to your Exchange 2003 FrontEnd server

Yes, external emails will reach Exchange 2003.

I have deleted and recreated the Interop RGC.  Then I did get-routinggroupconnector and showed that there are two RGC's listed.  I see two of them listed.  I called it "2003 2010 RGC".  I see the connector under first routing group in System Manager.

Anyway, I have created an internal send connector and restarted the transport service.  Afterwards, it still shows 451 4.4.0 DNS Query failed.
Are you creating using Exchange System Manager or EMC? Can you screenshot of Send Connector settings?

Yes, I'm using EMC on the Exchange 2010 server.   Not System Manager.

I have four of them currently.  Three of which are carried over after the installation.  The new one that I created in 10-03Connector.  Address space configured is *.  Source Server is the 2010 server.

Here is the error on the 2010 Queue Viewer.User generated image
Please post the results of:

Get-RoutingGroupConnector | fl

And

Get-SendConnector | fl

Have you confirmed the Default SMTP Virtual Server settings in the Exchabge 2003 System Manager as per my article?

though one.  there are many answers out there for this issue, but none was relative to this one.
