vmdk space for vmware esx server

I am currently trying to estimate how big of a nas I need for my backups.  I need to know lets say a virtual machine on vmware esx is provisioned for 500gb but is only using 100gb, is the vmdk file for that 100gb or 500gb?

how do I know if it is setup with thin or thick provisioning?
The space that will taken up by the b/u will also depend on the b/u solution. If it has de-dup, space can be less. It's really hard to determine the exact space to allocate. You'll hear b/u vendors suggest to just allocate as much space as the VM itself takes up, plus around 20% for growth. The only way to be sure is to do a test b/u with the b/u solution of your choosing. You can then 'guesstimate' appx how much space each b/u will take. You'll also need to consider incrementals.
