I have a clients HP DV6 laptop here which I am trying to re-install for them. They had a virus go through the computer and as well the harddrive had faults on it.
I created recovery discs from the old hard drive then installed new one and tried to load but there were always errors coming up at the end of the receovery process saying it was not completed, and Windows would not load.
i figured that the issue was that the recovery partition had become corrupted.
i then loaded Windows 7 via a Microsoft Windows CD. I used the license key that was on the laptop. When I went to activate it it came up with saying the key was not one that could be activated. Obviously because it uses a recovery system.
Purchased a Windows 7 license and activated that then. All good.
Now when I go and search for Windows Updates it says:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. you may need to restart your computer.
Restarted and checked the Windows Update service which was started. it still comes up with this error.
I deleted the log of files in c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder
Still the same.
I then tried to install Windows 7 Service pack 1 from a disc (which I have used successfuly on other computers) and it comes up part way through with "Catastrophic Failure"
I do not get any blue screens or freezing or anything like that. Windows works well other than this annoying issue.
Can anyone help out?
