I have a corporate network, 300+ computers running WinXP and Win7 on a Windows 2000 domain, most servers are Windows 2000 Advanced server. I need to upgrade the network OS to 2003, and I have a Windows 2003 enterprise edition server running as a member server to the domain. I would like upgrade it to ad DC, however most of the articles I've read out there state you must upgrade "them in the order listed PDC, then DNM, then RID". But as a stand alone server 2003 it doesn't host any of these roles as of yet.

The server that does host those roles isn't compatible (hardware) with 2003. Is there no path that allows a Windows 2003 server to be placed on a windows 2003 network that can then be promoted to a 2003 DC?
