iSeries: How to replace a failed drive?

I have an iSeries server V5R4M5 with a failed drive. When I try and boot the system it takes me to a screen with the error message a drive is missing. The only option I have is to press F3 which takes me to the IPL or Install the System screen. We no longer maintain support from IBM, so I have to replace the drive my self. I need to know the correct procedure on replacing this mirrored drive.

I think its a raid. If yes just replace the drive.

It is a raid array, but I am under the impression that you have to go into the DST console and replace the drive there and to a manual IPL. I just need to know the correct procedures. One wrong move and I have a lot more work.
Do yourself and your company a favor and get an experienced AS400 hardware person to help you with this the first time out.  The service manuals are all available, but if you don't know what you are doing you can really make a mess of things.  They also assume that you've been trained in basic service procedures.

If you need more help that a pointer to the service guide, please post more information about your issue:

What model system is this?  What OS version?
HMC managed?
What is the EXACT message that you get?
Do you have a good backup?
Will the system IPL?

Here is the link to the Service Provider Information section of the Power5 Information Center.  Use this information at your own risk.  These guides are intended for use by IBM trained service personnel - not end users.

The "V5R4M5" should indicate HMC-capable, though not guaranteed to be actually managed that way. I'd be a little concerned over the possible confusion between "this mirrored drive" and "It is a raid array."

Overall, I definitely agree that this should be done by someone who's (successfully) been through it. There are documented steps that can be followed, but there can also be elements can catch the attention of some who has seen it all before.

What happened was here in Louisville we has some nasty storms come though last Friday. We lost power 41 times between Friday night and Saturday morning, and 21 of them were proceeded by voltage overages. The UPS protected the systems, but needless to say they went up and down a lot. The first outage was long enough to deplete the batteries and the others were frequent enough to cause a roller coaster ride. One of the drives on our iSeries server is now showing up as missing. The exact error message is:
Dist Configuration Error Report
Missing disk units in the configuration

Details shows one missing drive:
ASP 1 Unit 9 Name DD041
I Press F3.
Log in to the DST with QSECOFR
Start a Service Tool
Hardware service manager
Locate resource by resource name
Search for DD041
Use Option 8 (Associated packaging resource(s))
Use Option 5 (Display Detail)
Find the device D14 for the location in the SAN (DASD 2 Slot 4)
F12 to main menu
On a side note the drive is showing as Active but has an *

Work with disk units
Work with disk unit recovery
Suspend mirrored protection

The drive is not there, but the other drive in the pair is there and it shows as status of suspended.
That is where I am stopping and asking for advice.
By the way I do have a complete set up backup tapes if needed.

I'm in Louisville, too - still dealing with fallout from the storms at several area clients.  If you can't find a hardware service provider that can help you, post back.
