Going batty trying to find the source of this issue.
Have not found any solution anywhere, hoping you can help.

Crawler is set to content index account.

QPR thanks for the reply.
I tried it and still get the same error.
The applog records the 2587 error every 10 minutes.
Any other things to look at.
Thanks!

Yes I saw that posting and tried it as well.
It failed at the disconnect the query server from the search topology go some odd error saying it could not do it as there was no valid query 0.
I gave up after 3 days of banging my head on this and reformatted and installed Sp2010 from scratch.
I carefully setup search from some step by step documentation and and it does work now.
Making a snapshot of the system this am before moving forward.
Sometimes its just easier to kill the whole thing and start over.
Thanks for your replies and trying to help.

Although the solution did not fix the problem as I reformatted and reinstalled Sharepoint, it has helped many others I noticed. Also the fact that my install couldn't do this at all convinced me the system is entirely borked and needs to be redone from scratch.
