linking to tracking information from tracking code

Is there any api or plugin I can integrate on my site so that if I have a tracking number, it will determine what shipping company it is from, and link to that site's tracking information?

Thanks a million

This might be doable, but I expect it would require something of a development effort.  The UPS tracking pages used to be GET-method requests - you could just plop a variable into a URL and read the page to get the tracking info.  Now that has been changed to a POST-method request, presumably in an effort to thwart attempts to find out where other people's packages are.  Logistics companies are understandably interested in keeping some of their information away from potentially bad actors.

I think if you ask the shipping companies for an API, you may be able to build this.  You would need to find the rules that differentiate the tracking numbers, then call the appropriate API to retrieve the shipping data.  The same script that calls the API would also format the shipping data for your use (maybe JSON or XML).  In computer science this is called a polymorphic adapter because a single script can adapt to many forms of external data and return a consistent response.
