Can I use DOM architecture to determine the value of HTML fields?

e.g. document.form.fieldname

Yes.
document.formname.fieldname.value

Of course, this requires your form to be named which few people do.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond to your timely answer, I am afraid that my js studies took a back seat for a while during a crisis, I have got back on track and I now am up to date and learning again thank you very much.
