Need good video converter

Hi -
I need a good free video converter. My camera records videos as .MOD files and I've always been able to rename them to .AVI and they worked fine, but I need to use them in After Effects and AE shows these converted videos as having one or two frames at most.
I've spent hours with Handbrake and Streamclip and have gotten nowhere.  I tried to install FoxTab and got a virus.
Please help!
I tried to upload a short clip as an example, but it won't upload.
If you let me know where to email it, you can have a sample and see if we can get this to convert to something that AE can use.  I can't be the only one with this problem.  My camera is a high-end JVC.  I can't afford a new one!

I ended up having to use Camtasia to make an MP4 to import into AE, then taking it back out to Camtasia for editing - never buying a JVC again.

Actually, I would like to give the person some points, but I have read that the suggestion he made does not convert MOD files and I don't want the wrong answer out there, so what do I do?
