Dave, thanks this should work.

What's the best approach to actually implementing jQuery on a Drupal site?

(I'm familiar with using jQuery on HTML pages, but not in a system like Drupal)

I don't know anything about Drupal.  Looking at the Drupal web site, it appears that jQuery is already part of Drupal.  Make sure you don't add a second copy of any of the javascript files when you use the slideshow code.  In particular, don't add an older copy of jQuery.
