can not connect to the configuration database

I have change the user name and password that is used to connect to sql server 2008 sharepoint_config database. and i get the message Can not connect to the configuration database. how can i resolved the issue such that application pool sharepoint -80 is able to connet to the sql server with the new user name and password.

You need to update the Farm credentials in SharePoint using STSADM command...

stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin DomainName\UserName -password NewPassword
