I suggest that you download and install what Brother calls the Full Driver & Software Package. It is available for your MFC at:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc8890dw_all

Be sure to select the right OS. Then download the Software User's Guide:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002446/cv_dcp8080n_usaeng_soft_b.pdf

On page 52 is a section called "Scan to E-mail". It shows exactly how to do it. Regards, Joe

The solution posted by joewinograd is for scanning using either Outlook or Outlook Express on a PC with a direct (USB) connection to the printer in question. For a networked printer, using an e-mail server may be a better option. Scan to e-mail server is on page 204 of the second link posted by joewinograd
