Why do I get error Section element is not valid in VS2008

Someone gave me a master page created in a designer using html 5.  I bring the doucment into a web site project and I get errors that "Validation XHTMl transitional... Section element is not supported.  So I know while using my vs2008 that my validattion checking is wrong somewhere but dont have a clue where to look.
