JOOMLa framework website is extremely slow

We have a basic website hosted using JOOMLA framework. The website response is pretty slow. How can we improve the performance of the website esp when lot of users hitting it same time it is getting slower and slower. Any ideas, resources, links, suggestions highly appreciated. thanks in advance

Joomla has nothing to do with Java. Not sure why it's in this TA..?
