Google Chrome Browser - Latest upgrade a nightmare?

Over the past few days or so, --since the latest upgrade-- I've noticed that my chrome browser has become DREADFULLY slow.  And when I check out the task list the memory usage is over the top.  It went from under 60M to almost 200!

Can I downgrade to the earlier version of Chrome?

Have you checked for malware/spyware with a program such as malwarebytes? I don't know of any update that would've caused it to be slow. Perhaps try a system restore?

Spyware detection?  Which one should I use?
Recently every spyware detection package I've used says I'm totally clean!

Latest Chrome Browser IS A NIGHTMARE.
Memory hog,
multiple instances of CHROME.EXE in the task list remain long after you close your sessions.  Sorry google apologists,
