Outlook 2010 - 'Open other user's folder'

Exchange 2010, Win2008, Outlook 2010 clients.

I used to be able to open all my users mailboxes in Outlook from 'Open other user's folder'. I am a member of  'Organization Management' in Exchange Roles, and a domain admin on the domain.

I know can not open my students mailboxes, and I think it's since I moved all my student mailboxes to a new database (on the same server and domain).

what do I need to do? I can't remember how I gave myself the 'view other users mailbox' rights in the first place.

I am actually tring to do this to give a group of users full access to a mailbox, so following the method above I add 'domain\group' but it doesn't seem to work. should it work with groups?

giving an individual user full access does work but in outlook logged in as me after 'open other users folder' the other users mailbox gets listed on the left hand side as an additonal mailbox and never goes away.

ideas?
