WSUS 3.0 SP2 needs repair/unable to reinstall

I had WSUS setup on a window server 2008 R2 x64 server. It was having trouble and I was unable to repair so I decided to try and reinstall and start new.

I used the following links to attempt uninstall of WSUS 3.0 SP2 and windows internal database.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939818(WS.10).aspx
http://blogs.technet.com/b/sus/archive/2008/11/05/how-to-manually-remove-all-of-wsus.aspx

Now the role still shows up in server manager and I am unable to remove the role. I restarted the server and I am still unable to remove. I also tried downloading WSUS 3 SP2 and running the installer, it fails. The log it provides is below.

I have searched all over the internet looking for a way to reinstall WSUS but I am making no progress at this point.

How do I get WSUS installed again? I am assuming I will need to manually remove what is left of windows internal database and WSUS but I have found nothing explaining what reg keys to modify and what files to remove.

Thanks,

Justin

Did you try to install via "Add roles" or via the Stand-Alone installer?

I have tried installing via a stand alone installer. It is worth noting that my WSUS install used internal database. I removed WSUS and the internal database and now I want to reinstall WSUS and use SQL. SQL is already installed and functioning on the server. However, when I try to do a stand alone installer, where it says "use an existing database server on this computer" is grayed out and I am only able to select windows internal database option. I am not sure why this is the case.

When I go to add server role, WSUS is checked as if it is already installed. However, I have manually removed it and I know it is not installed. I go to remove server role and WSUS is not an option to remove. If I check server features, internal database is removed. The error log I posted above is from trying to install using windows internal database since that is my only option.

How can I get the WSUS installer to allow me to use the SQL database?

I checked the link above but I am logged in as administrator of the domain. Permissions should not be an issue. I also checked other links from the link above and had no luck.

Thanks,

Justin

The domain administrator is added as a sysadmin for SQL server. I am using windows authentication for the SQL server.

I found the reg key you mentioned and deleted it. Once I did that, the role was removed from server manager and it was an option to install again.

I tried to add the role again and I received the following error.

"The update could not be found. There may be a network connection issue."

Since I received the above error, I thought I would try to install WSUS SP 2 manually. When I do, I am still unable to choose the local SQL instance to place the database in. It is grayed out.

So I choose to continue by installing internal database since it is my only option and it still fails. The following was in the log.

I do have the SQL SP4 update which tried to install via automatic updates and failed. I am wondering if this failed update is making it so I cannot choose SQL during WSUS setup?

I can't try to force this update to install until Monday or Tuesday evening. So we will not know until then and only if I am successful with getting the update to install.

Also, once I get this working, should I reuse the database that was used with the previous install or should I create a new one?

Thanks,

Justin

You can keep the downloaded patches but drop the database.

The standalone installer should have written some logs for the internal database (Yukon*.log or WSUSYukon*.log) to the installation users %temp% folder.

I eventually was able to get WSUS manually installed by selecting to install the database on a remote server and then typing in (local) to use the local SQL instance.

I had the same problem and it seems I solved it (at least in my scenario it worked).
1) Find this tree in registry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup
2) Change value of this key "wYukonInstalled" from 1 to 0
3) Try to install WSUS 3.0 (it will perform ininstall first and install at second run)
