There is a Patch 1.51 which includes fixes for security.  Perhaps you can get that one to work for you.

After you installed Battlefield 2142 did you create your user account before installing the patch?

This game assumes that you want to play online, which means that you need a user name and password.  However, I found a work around to play offline as follows:

Instructions
1 Click the Windows “Start” button.

2 Click “Control Panel.” A new window opens on your screen.

3 Type “Adapter” in the blank text field at the top right corner of the Control Panel.

4 Click “View Network Connections” from the list of options on your screen.

5 Right-click your active broadband, wireless or dial-up Internet connection. The active connection features a series of green bars, while inactive connections feature a red “X” icon.

6 Click “Disable” for a broadband connection or “Disconnect” for a wireless or dial-up Internet. You may be prompted for an administrator password at this time.

7 Start "Battlefield 2142." The game tries to connect to the server automatically, but fails because of the disabled connection.

8 Click “Play Offline” when presented with an on-screen prompt. You can play any map in offline mode on "Battlefield 2142" after the connection fails. The game does not have “bots,” so your character wanders the empty offline level all alone, but you can explore the map or practice using various in-game items in privacy on the vacant "Battlefield 2142" level.

It appears that the game requires an internet connection and user account.  This is their form of copy protection.

Internet connection: 128kbit Cable/DSL connection

So, you may have to uninstall the game and re-install to get prompted to create your user account. Then, After you have created your user account apply the patch.
