Windows 2008 DFS replication not working as expected

Here is my setup
3 file servers    core01, core02,core03
1 dfs replication group
domain namespaces

yesterday core01 went offline due to datastore issues,

my understanding is that since our data is replicating across core01,02,03 the end users should have had access to the files even though core01 went offline.

that didnt happen, core02  has the following errors:

Warning:The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner CORE01 for replication group Training due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.
Error:The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner CORE01 for replication group IT rep test. This error can occur if the host is unreachable, or if the DFS Replication service is not running on the server

Where should I start to look
thanks

Well from the wording, that error message sounds as though it is describing exactly what you would expect with Core01 offline?

Was your issue really one of DFS Namespaces rather than DFS Replication?
Check how your Namespace is configured and how users are accessing things within it.
