If you are changing the settings for one particular document or applications it wont update.. You have to update from the devices and printers - Printing preferences..<br />

If you are using a network printer that is a different case.. If it a local printer that is a different case.. In network printers - when you add printer all the settings in the printsever will be downloaded into the desktop and from there you can use it.. and change the paper settings ..<br />

But if it is a local printer set up you can set the custom size to your desired.<br />

It also depends on the drivers and some times model of the printer.<br />

Please let me know type of usage(network/local) of the printer and model of the printer(HP Laserjet 9000) like that. Let me know these things I will try to give you a right solution.<br />
