Mac Outlook 2011 changes server name from external address to internal server name

Hi Experts,

I have multiple Apple Macs which use Outlook 2011 which is configured to use the external exchange address (OWA) as the server name in the settings. This works fine.
Also the computers use a VPN connection to connect to the server frequently.
Every couple of days the server name changes to the internal exchange server name in Outlook. This is fine whilst a VPN connection is up but when it is disconnected Outlook can no longer connect to the server and the external address has to be manually entered.

Please can someone explain how this happens without user interaction apart from establishing a VPN connection. It does not happen every time and is completely inconsistent.

Well it sounds like there are different names setup for OWA access internally and externally.
Can you run the BPA on the exchange server?
