You have to check if your Project copy is authenticated - a lot of times this happens when the software is not installed correctly or it is not registered.

In addition, could you please tells us
(1) if it always to same projects that crash Project every time?
If is the same file, try
a) when launching MSP and choosing the connection, uncheck the box "Load Summary Resource Assigments".
b) If MSP auto connects, change it to manually choose the connection
c) Open the project to edit in PWA, press the calculate button on the ribbon then save and publish the, then try and open in MSP again
If that does not solve it is probably an installation problem.
(2) Does this happen only at the timeline?  Is the project a large one?
(3) Is the file local or on a server?  The crash may be due to a shared resourse file.
If you have a shared resource file you run the risk through such resource pools for file corruption and network fragility is a file corruption trigger. So if someone else is using the same file and moving, renaming and over-writing files, this may be the cause of your crash/hang up, especially in the timeline.

The file works fine on all the other computers, which are Window 7 64 bit running Office and Project 2010. it's on a shared drive with change access. We have close to 2TBs of files on this share with no share or over-writing issues. On this computer any project file will hang when you right click on any of the months to select timescale.

What is PWA?

Microsoft Project Web App (PWA)  if you have it.

Now, you file is on a network and hangs only on the particular computer - right?
So it seems that this is a problem with the particular computer.
A couple of questions
(1) the software is registered?
(2) do all computers use Project 2010 with the same Service Packs?

It seems that there have been some issues with Timelines and SP1.
