There is no optical zoom on the iPhone camera .. you are simply zooming in on the image using a digital zoom.

When viewing photos using the Camera App .. there is a digital ZOOM which on the iPhone 4 and 4S is 5x magnification

Depending on your model of iPhone the front and back camera have different resolutions so the quality will change between photos taken with front or rear-facing camera.

Is there any way, we can achieve more than 40X zoom.  I don't mind image to be monotone if some visual enhancements need to be used.

5x digital zoom is the limit.
