Inner join lists-update different list from workflow (SharePoint)

I have 2 lists.  When I create a new item in list 1, I want a workflow to be triggered that does the equivalent of an inner join between the 2 lists.  It then updates list 1 with the Email Address listed in list 2.  Workflows are archane and frustrating.  Ideas?
