Six internal disks - To support drives 5 and 6, the optional HP Mini SAS 4i 13.4 inch/0.35 m cable [may be] required (PN 399546-B21). Some models have this fitted as standard.

You can of course add a SAS controller with external ports for DAS enclosures, e.g. MSA70.

Any idea as to how many additional NICs and types of that i can fit?  It has 2x (which i plan to use for LAN) and want to get 4x port or 2x 2ports added for the ISCi SAN traffic....

There's a quad port gigabit card, HP NC364T PCI Express Quad Port Gigabit Server Adapter
435508-B21. Half height and full height brackets are included.

Re the MSA70.  I assume this is purely an extension to the local storage of the server and cannot be used as shared storage???

Yes, it's just DAS so as far as the OS sees it it is local disks. (it can be used as an additional enclosure on a SAN but then it's local to the SAN controllers so to speak).

So an extension to the SAN which acts as shared storage?

Also according to page 23 of the http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12476_div/12476_div.HTML#Storage link you sent, do you know if we can mix and mathch DIMMS of different sizes?  In our case we have a number of 4gb, 2gb and 1gb dimms,
So for 64gb per host can we have:

PROC1    PROC2
8gb         8gb
8             8
4             4
4             4
2             2
2             2
2             2
2             2

8GB RAMs are the best price at the moment so yes, use them on the G7, and you can mix/match just about anything within reason. Is there a question on EE about it?

Sounds a bit high - £600 for two at the following link, = £2,400 for 8  -  http://uk.insight.com/en-gb/apps/productpresentation/index.php?alert=categoryresults&product_id=IPEE301521&gclid=CIeAz6-Oha8CFUcntAoddQlf0Q

Seems they are charging nearly twice as much to get them in a pack of 8, so much for bulk discount! Just buy 4 pairs.

hypertec and Kingston equivalents are a bit cheaper. It's supply/demand though, DDR3 are cheaper than DDR2 because they're old and the fabs aren't making them much any more. Pity you can't use DDR3 in the G5.

Mix/match is much less flexible on the G5 than your new G7, have to be in pairs.

If I remember correctly you can use any mix as long as they're installed in pairs. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12476_div/12476_div.HTML#Memory
