Hello I am working in a small company and it has no global style sheet.

There are several hundred style sheets all pertinent to various controls for a Java web application.

Could you please help me understand what would be involved in moving to a global stylesheet to control issues like browser compatibility and aspect ratios, et al etc?

Moving all css to a global CSS is normal task which require certain things to keep in mind while moving..
1. Identfy all common css that every page or maximum pages are using.
2. All Class & ID's styles must be unique across all css files that you want to merge.
3. If Duplicate found, then it better to define 2 Global CSS files,as because it will not affect you ui otherwise it will effect you UI and at that it's become more tedious (sometime impossible) to find the collision.

Hope this will help you to make good decision.
