Peer to Peer Game Connction Issues

I have drug out my old favorite- Baldur's Gate.  I can play peer to peer if I connect over a gateway to gateway VPN, but two computers sitting on the same network don't work.  VIA VPN the distant computer can join a game with either of the computers on my LAN and vice versa.  However my two computers refuse to talk to each other.

I have set exceptions on windows FW.

I have turned off windows FW.

Both LAN PC's are connected via switching ports on a ZyXEL VPN gateway.

I have tried connecting them via a simple switch, no good.

Both PC's can ping each other no problem.  Both PC's are set by DHCP to talk on the same subnet.   No conflicting IP's.

Any suggestions?

If the computers can ping each other, but can't communicate over the game, then it it MUST be a firewall issue!

Perhaps you have a firewall running that you are unaware of!

Do you have some nasty version like McAfee or Norton on either machine?  These are well known problem programs that prevent proper access...

Did you tell Windows 7 networking they are both on PRIVATE networks and NOT PUBLIC?

how do you give the host information (such as IP address) of the remote peer?

do you and all participants need to log on to a remote central server to register before playing game online??

If it were a fw issue, I wouldn't think the computer over the VPN would successfully connect to the LAN PCs.  (All Win7).  Yes, all PC's consider their LAN network a "Work" network.  that said, please let me know your thoughts as I'm pulling my hair out.

No 3rd party fw's involved.

clients connect to the 'server' PC who hosts the game by manually entering the 'server's' IP.  So no Battlenet-like situation, it's an old-fashioned peer to peer situation, just one peer acts as a hosting server.

then it sounds like a routing table issue. could you please post the IP CONFIG /ALL and ROUTE PRINT results of both local computers to play the game??

Okay, so I took one of the computers (laptop) that could not connect to the server to the other side of the VPN.  Once it was accross the VPN, all worked on the laptop immedately.  Apparently it looks to be sure clients are on sepeart subnet?  Anyway, I'm guessing I'll just have to play this through an old router.
