This is a sample applicacion for a sofa simulator where different fabrics can be applied over the sofa body.

There isn't any software mapping used to map the patterns to the furniture, it's just old fashioned hard work. A database was made of all of the furniture styles. Each style was then divided into zones (the areas that are highlighted when you mouse over them) An artist took the pattern and placed the proper perspective distortion  and contours, even added seams where appropriate, and saved the image to the database.

Clicking on a zone does an image lookup. A semi opaque version of the image is pasted over the grayscale image allowing the shadow to show through.

The construction seems to be done in a custom interactive "movie" made by the Spanish design firm Imaginanet.

That's why there is still a need for designers. Not everything can be done with software.
