BE 2010 R3 SP2 running on a Dell PE R710. Library is a Tandberg StoreageLoader LTO-4.

Windows 2008 R2.

I've changed a bunch of settings from compression to block size etc. Nothing at all changes the slow rate of about 45MB/min. Any ideas?

I have another larger Tandberg with 24 slots connected to another Win2008 server and I get about 4GB/min!

Have you run a standalone tape diag on the affected machine?

An issue with our switch was causing the slow backups.
