I am new to Sharepoint and am tasked with creating a new intranet  with Sharepoint 2010 to replace our current html site.  The Sharepoint 2010 intranet will host a number of individual department sites besides an overall employee informational site and a help desk site.  What is the best site collection template to use for something like this?

Hello,

it depends on the content you want to create on the sites and how you want people to contribute.

For example, a site collection based on the Team template with the Publishing feature enabled, so news articles can be created and managed easily. Individual department sites created with the Enterprise Wiki template, so departments can easily manage their own content. Add lists and libraries to each sub site as required.

cheers, teylyn

Your selected template will be you home site. So Team site template or Blank site template (to customize it for your needs) can be used.
For department' sites you will be able to choose other templates depend on requirements (or features they have).
