do not just tell me 'event viewer'

how can I see what caused the 500 error

could this be a database error because my database is getting larger

I assume you get this error when browsing the site.  If using Internet Explorer, in advanced setting you can turn off "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

When you next get the error it should give you a detailed error message about where the error occured - i.e. which line of code - so you can begin to troubleshoot it.
