do not just tell me 'event viewer'

how can I see what caused the 500 error

could this be a database error because my database is getting larger

since I have access to the server (windows server 2008) I would prefer a server side answer

You are getting this error when browsing the site.  In Internet Explorer, in advanced setting you can turn off "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

then it will give you a detailed error message about where the error occured - i.e. which line of code - so you can begin to troubleshoot it.
