"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Absolutely not. The WinSxS folder is a binary representation of all of the components of the OS. The other references are actually hard links to this folder. So deleting it *or* moving it will be fundamentally breaking the OS.

The only way to remove items from WinSxS is to uninstall unnecessary programs. Other than that, you must look elsewhere to clear up space. WinSxS usually doesn't grow rapidly or often. So if you find yourself running low on space, it usually means there is another culprit.

open elevated command prompt
run this:

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

it will remove tmp service pack files

also run 'disk cleanup' - choose everything
