Windows Server 2008 WinSXS folder.

I have a windows 2008 server (not R2)
I have a folder c:\windows\winsxs

i) Can I move the location of this folder or stop it from growing?
I am running low on C: drive space.

Absolutely not. The WinSxS folder is a binary representation of all of the components of the OS. The other references are actually hard links to this folder. So deleting it *or* moving it will be fundamentally breaking the OS.

The only way to remove items from WinSxS is to uninstall unnecessary programs. Other than that, you must look elsewhere to clear up space. WinSxS usually doesn't grow rapidly or often. So if you find yourself running low on space, it usually means there is another culprit.

open elevated command prompt
run this:

dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded

it will remove tmp service pack files

also run 'disk cleanup' - choose everything

oh - and no - you cannot move or delete files in this folder...
