When I try to download a file from any FTP site after a certain period the connection drops automatically.  I have tried it with different computers on our network with the same result.  What could be happening here?

Try using some FTP client.

If unresolved, also check if the behavior remains the same for someother FTP site externally as it could be due to Firewall settings.
