Hi

I have a Asus P501J laptop now the picture on it has gone very faint as if the backlight has gone on it. But when we replaced the LED screen as it has no inverter the same problem occurred. Could this be caused by a fault on the motherboard.

That's a very strange problem, Just to be clear you replaced the lcd which does not use an inverter and you are still getting very dim or faint images on the screen ?
Possible issues
1.) The graphics card in the laptop may have failed you can try to update the latest driver for it or even uninstall and re-install the device,
Also if the laptop has a video out (VGA/DVI/HDMI)  try connecting it to an external monitor or projector , this should give you an idea if the graphics card is faulty.

2.) The screen may not be getting sufficient voltage this could be caused by the cables for the screen getting pinched or snagged somewhere around the hinge mechanism.

The graphics card works fine as I tested it on a external monitor. So it could be the power cables as you suggest.
