I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

iOS includes native support to preview PDF and Word documents so you simply need to get the files from your PC to the iPad.

There are several ways to do this
1. Attach files to email and send them to an account that is setup on iPad.  Simply open the email and click on the attachments to view .. simple.
2. Use a filesharing App such as Dropbox or SugarSync .. this creates a folder on your PC that copies all files to a similar folder on the iPad and keeps the 2 in sync automatically using the Internet.  You can put Word, XLS, PDF in the folder on your PC and open in the Dropbox or SugarSync App on the iPad almost instantly.
3. Use a dedicated app such as DocStorm or Documents2Free or my favourite (Good Reader) which you then upload files in the iTunes App subsection for the device.
4. You can use an iPad app called CouldOn to even EDIT MS Word and Excel files on your iPad if you are really determined and they work with your Dropbox folder as listed above.

Personally I prefer option 2 as it is easy to add/remove files and no messing with iTunes.

If the files are very private or security is an issue you may prefer the cloud-free features of apps in option 3
