picture on mp3

when you download mp3 and put on ipod, it also shows a still picture... how is this meshed into the mp3 audio..

It's called an "ID3 tag". The picture and other information such as title, artist, etc. are all embedded into the mp3 file itself (actually it's sort of tagged on to the end of the file). Some programs will actually allow you to edit this data and modify the mp3, while some others will store data separately and bring it up when the mp3 file is accessed.
