"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I generally get our new starters that don't know anything to work their way through this:
Head First SQL

It lays things out in a very simple way and is very accessible unlike many books, and really guides you through everything. W3Schools is also a great recommendation, the difficulty is that you can't really learn from just one source, its good to go on a few forums, a few websites and one or two well selected books.
