Hello Experts,

I am want to purchase a PCI RAID controller for an Dell PowerEdge 840.  I am looking to install raid 1. It would be nice to have 1s (spare) option on the controller.

Can you recommend a solid controller that is a reasonable price.  I don't want to pay more than the server is worth...  $50 would be nice.

If you are looking for an inexpensive RAID-1 solution, avoid the fake RAID controllers and use Windows.  Windows 2008 supports RAID-1 and actually gives you load balancing on the drives, with very little cpu usage.

Expert dlethe (who writes RAID controller drivers) also recommends software RAID over cheap hardware RAID:

I knew there was software RAID but did not think to look at Windows Server 2008 which I am using.  Thanks

I was nervous about a $30 raid controller.
