My nginx configuration shows one specific URL has an upstream server address of localhost.  However the web files are not stored on the nginx server.  Why would this be like this?

Is there a different port configured for it, so that a different server can handle those requests?

This is called reverse proxy, in that a different backend can be used to handle web requests.
Somewhat more info on the configuration is needed to answer this better.
