Excel freezing when clicking on File when attached to the network

This is windows 7, Office 2010.  When connected to ANY network cable, open Excel, click File, Excel freezes.  

It's only Excel.  No other program does this.
It's only when connected to a network, any network.

Already removed the Office Validation tool.

any more ideas?

Given the situation thus far,

(1) Remove / disable Excel add-ins to see if that helps.

(2) If no, uninstall Office 2010 completely and restart. Ensure you are using Office 2010 32-bit (not 64-bit at this time), install full (not typical) except for languages foreign to you. Install SP1 and patch fully. Check Excel add-ins and try again.

Completed all of those tasks already.  did the add-ins.  removed office 07 and upgraded to 2010 (it was doing it in 07 as well).  did office 2010 install, patched, updated, etc.  Still does it.  

NIC in, excel and excel only freezes.

NIC out, excel works fine.

So then:

(1) Consider malware and check accordingly.
(2) Reset the TCP/IP stack with the netsh command or in the Network dialogue, right click on the NIC and repair it.

Is this one machine? It sounds like it. More aggressive approaches:

(1) Open an admin prompt and run SFC /SCANNOW. Allow to complete and restart. If errors were not all corrected, re-run SFC again.
(2) If you have the Windows 7 DVD, back up the machine and try a Windows 7 Repair install.
(3) It may be necessary to re-install Windows 7.

I have lots of this combination (Windows 7, Office 2007/Office 2010) myself and at clients and we do not get this difficulty at all. .... Thinkpads_User
